AI&ET AI and Emerging Technologies in Assessment Exploring

Artificial Intelligence is reshaping industries, yet the human perspective remains pivotal in determining its success. At Janison, our journey with Jai, our advanced AI-driven question generation platform, vividly illustrates this essential interplay between people and technology. This presentation explores how Jai significantly transformed our assessment item production processes, reducing associated costs by over 50% while enhancing item quality and improving production schedules.

Initially, our teams greeted Jai's introduction with a mix of curiosity, scepticism, and apprehension—common reactions when new technologies disrupt established workflows. Concerns about job security, AI reliability, and the perceived complexity of integrating AI into everyday tasks surfaced frequently. Understanding and addressing these reactions transparently became central to Jai's successful implementation.

We adopted a human-centred approach, involving our expert assessment staff deeply in Jai’s development, ensuring it aligned closely with their needs and processes. Jai was not presented as a replacement but rather as an augmentation of our team's capabilities, enhancing their productivity, creativity, and accuracy. Through continuous feedback loops, team members contributed directly to Jai’s evolution, fostering a sense of ownership and trust.

Over time, apprehension transformed into enthusiasm as the tangible benefits became clear. Assessment teams reported increased capacity to generate diverse and high-quality items faster than ever, liberating valuable human hours for deeper analytical and creative tasks. Jai quickly became viewed as a valued team member rather than a distant technological tool.

Our experience emphasises that AI’s real power emerges when it complements human expertise rather than replacing it. Now, our teams actively engage in Jai’s ongoing improvement, contributing innovative ideas, refining functionalities, and exploring new applications within our assessment frameworks. This collaborative dynamic has strengthened organisational resilience and creativity, demonstrating the profound potential when humans and AI collaborate effectively.

This presentation will share valuable insights from our implementation journey, highlighting best practices for integrating AI tools, managing human factors in technological change, and cultivating an organisational culture that embraces AI as a partner in progress.
